“I saw you kissing him,” Brandon said, sipping his coffee and giving Josh a knowing look. “And you tried to make me believe that it was all so innocent and platonic between the two of you. I know better, though. I knew I was right.”

Josh wasn’t even sure why he’d gone over to Brandon’s apartment instead of just going back to sleep, but now he was really having second thoughts about that decision.

“What? Were you like, spying on us out the window?” Josh rubbed his forehead to try and stave off the headache he could already feel coming on. “It wasn’t what it looked like, anyway.”

“It wasn’t a kiss?” Brandon arched a brow. “Because it sure looked like a kiss. And it lasted kind of a long time to have been some sort of mouth-to-mouth accident.”

Josh rolled his eyes. “Okay, so it was a kiss. But it never should have happened. I don’t know why it happened.”

“You kissed him or he kissed you?”

“He kissed me.”

Brandon’s eyes grew even wider. “Oh, wow. So what’s the problem? I thought that was what you wanted.”

“I never said that was what I wanted.” Josh shook his head. “I’m pretty sure I’ve been saying we’re just friends this entire time.”

Josh had mostly gone to Brandon’s door with the intention of getting his mind off Kevin. A nice, funny distraction to keep him from thinking about last night.

He really hadn’t expected that Brandon had been up here and watching the whole thing unfold from his living room window.

“Josh, I know I haven’t known you all your life like this Kevin guy apparently has,” Brandon said. “But I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You’re not a very good liar. Your whole face lights up whenever you’re around him. More than it would if he was just a friend. I’m your friend and you don’t look at me like that.”

“That’s because you’re on my nerves,” Josh said. He knew Brandon was right, though—and that was also annoying. “But okay, so I’m not a great liar. Is that a bad thing?”

“Of course not. It’s a really good thing, actually. But I’m just trying to figure out why it’s such a bad thing that you guys had an innocent little kiss last night? If you wanted it and he wanted it… what’s the problem? You’re both consenting adults. It didn’t look like either of you coerced the other one into doing anything.”

“I don’t love that you were paying such close attention, if I’m being honest,” Josh said, wrinkling his nose. “This living vicariously thing should probably have some boundaries.”

Brandon smirked. “It probably should. But here we are. I know what I saw, and I’m just saying that it didn’t look bad from where I was sitting.”

“Well, whatever it was, it can’t happen again.” Josh sighed. “I sent him a text a little while ago apologizing and saying that he doesn’t need to go with me to the wedding.” Josh could feel his eyes start to sting as he blinked back tears.
